Teaching - Program

Teaching Project in Ghana

• Volunteer work at local primary schools to help the disadvantaged children gain significant knowledge and learn new academic skills.

• Help out local trainers/teachers with conducting classes in 

  English language and Grammar skills, Mathematics, General

  Science, Computer Studies

  As a teaching Volunteer in Ghana, you will be helping to provide lessons to children in our local partner schools. Though doing amazing work to nurture the talents, confidence and life skills of underprivileged children, these schools are often underfunded and consequently under-staffed. Volunteers will support local teachers and work at schools, kindergartens or special needs schools. Your main focus is teaching English language, Mathematics, General Science, Computer Studies, and giving students more confidence with their academic pursuit. Ghana schools are very vibrant places with most pupils extremely willing to learn.

 

Purpose of the project:

Volunteers Teaching English language, Mathematics, General Science, Computer Studies and projects are placed in urban and rural schools to assist the local teachers in teaching students. Developing effective conversational English skills can be very beneficial for the students as it enhances students’ academic prospects. Moreover local students interaction with international Volunteers helps widen their
knowledge base. Volunteers can bring along teaching materials such as picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Volunteer Teaching project gives opportunity to make a significant; participants passionate about helping people through empowering means.

Healthcare -Program

Our healthcare project is best suited for those with an interest or background in medicine. Our healthcare placements offer an exceptional learning opportunity, in addition to a gratifying volunteer experience. These placements offer an international learning ground where you can not only view healthcare in practice but effects of volunteering in Ghana health facility.

Volunteers in the Healthcare program in Ghana work along with doctors, nurses and local staff in hospitals.

Volunteers assist the local doctors and nursing staff in daily tasks. Exact Volunteer tasks are determined depending on the volunteer’s qualifications,experience, and knowledge.

Healthcare volunteers in Ghana provide hands-on support at clinics and hospitals. Volunteers will assist in diagnose different conditions; assist with basic tasks, support staff and patients in the prenatal, labour and postnatal wards.

Volunteers may work in a variety of departments, including nursing and dentistry, accident and emergency, pharmacy, orthopedics, maternity or midwifery, physical therapy, general practice wards and surgical departments.

Purpose of the project:
Healthcare Volunteer project in Ghana will put your experience and training to use. As a Healthcare volunteer, you will be working in a local clinic or hospital by helping to lessen the burden on the stretched resources of the medical service.
These facilities are often stretched to breaking point and in desperate need of additional help. This is where you come in and whether you are a doctor, nurse or medical student, you can use your skills to care for the community, whilst learning invaluable professional and life skills from the local healthcare teams, as you will have the opportunity to put into practice the skills you've learnt whilst helping those in real need.
This program is particularly suited for those volunteers who are interested in health issues and doing ‘hands-on’ clinical work.

Community Development - Program

Under the Community Development Volunteer program in Ghana, volunteers have the option to work for several different projects in the local communities. Volunteer responsibilities include working in schools, contributing to renovation work, taking part in health awareness programs, water hygiene efforts among others.

                   

We are always in the lookout for Volunteers who have passion for development and willing to contribute their time, skills and experience to support our community development efforts. Most participants see this as an adventure or a Work Camp. Volunteers are needed for the on-going construction, painting and building projects in various communities of Ghana.

Purpose of the project:
Volunteers will help improve infrastructure throughout communities, clinics, community centers and schools. Additional Volunteer tasks will include painting, brick laying, plastering, digging, block shaping, carpentry, steel bending, mortar mixing, and much more. Volunteers in the Community Development project work in designated project areas together with the local people to make a valuable contribution. By working along with
the local villagers, our volunteers engage meaningfully with their host community, understand their needs and do the volunteer work accordingly.

Women Empowerment Support - Program

In Ghana Women Empowerment support, Volunteers help women by teaching them financial literacy, business development, or even helping with teaching arts and crafts for income generation (basket weaving, jewelry-making, sewing, beads making, soap making, and more).

You can Volunteer to make a difference and in many ways, you can help women build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.This will eventually increase females’ access to education, while improving their employment opportunities and quality of life.

And in addition,our women’s empowerment program aims to provide support to local organizations working to promote gender equality in in Ghana. Our women's empowerment volunteers can look forward to contributing to, amongst others, the UN Sustainable Development Goal #4, Gender Equality.

As volunteers you will work with a variety of females teaching English, health and life skills classes across different ages and levels, depending on the needs of the local community at the time.

Purpose of the project:

On this program, Volunteers will work directly with local women groups and also female students via various projects engagements to help these women to learn practical vocational skills, such as IT literacy, English language, business management, curriculum vitae writing, financial planning and more. Participants will assist in delivering practical workshops to help deliver on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: UN SDG #1, No Poverty; SDG #5, Gender Equality and SDG #10 Reduced Inequalities. 

Your time and efforts will help the women improve their self-determination, increase families’ and communities’ quality of life, and help women to meaningfully contribute towards increasing the general productivity as well as economic and social development of Ghana.

Environmental Conservation - Program

Environmental Conservation Volunteers will be able to help conservation efforts to protect and build up parks and natural areas through local initiatives and activities.

As a volunteer with this program, you will learn about all aspects of conservation. You will work with organizations on a wide range of conservation initiatives such as assisting with site restoration, planting of trees, maintenance of planting areas, and administrative assistance.

We welcome volunteers who are interested in working with the nursery area of our projects.

Volunteers will assist with: tree nursery, transplanting, choosing seedlings, adding seed bags, adding water to the nursery, and fetching water.

Conservation volunteering placements bring volunteers to work directly with national parks, nature reserves and conservation organizations. The range of placements in this section cover, "hands-on" placements; working in the parks and reserves, as well as placements working to raise awareness regarding environmental and conservation issues in more urban areas.

Purpose of the project:

Volunteers are needed in maintaining a tree nursery, transplanting, picking of seedlings, filling of seed bags, watering of the nursery, and fetching of water. Although there is no special qualification for the project, volunteers must be able to adapt to a tropical environment and in excellent shape.

Assist other volunteers in environmental conservation efforts.

Perform a variety of tasks, including maintaining a tree nursery and picking seedlings.

This project is specially designed to suits volunteers for its ecological projects for periods of one to five months. This project includes: promoting the use of sustainable practices; renewable energy development; and environmental education and the re-vegetation of hillsides using native plants to reduce erosion and create habitats; participants who are also interested in the nursery conservation can also apply. While some background and training in conservation and park management may be beneficial, most of our conservation volunteer placements do not require any training. Generally, for placements that take place in parks or reserves, volunteers need to be willing to work in remote settings and to take on quite physical tasks. For conservation awareness projects, volunteers will not generally be living in urban areas and the placements tend to be less physically demanding.

Agriculture - Program

As Agriculture volunteer, you’ll be based on local farms, helping with both crop (corn, eggplants, capsicums and palms) and animal farming (pigs, rabbits, goats, chickens).

 You’ll be involved in clearing and developing land for crops, fertilizing, planting,nurturing, teaching farming techniques to locals, fencing, and assisting with purchasing,moving and caring for stock.

Your work will depend on the season and your exact placement, which will be determined based on the needs of the local community.​ ​You aren’t required to have previous agricultural experience to participate on this project, but you should come expecting physical work. More experienced volunteers may be able to assist in developing the project and teaching new techniques to locals, helping them to farm their crops and animals more effectively.

Work on the Agriculture project usually stops during the hottest period of the day, and during this time you can assist with teaching in local schools to ensure you have sufficient volunteer work.

Purpose of the project:

The focus of this project is to alleviate the difficulties that face local farmers by providing a sustainable food source for them. Volunteer work on the Agriculture Project includes both animal and crop farming. The specific tasks volunteers will carry out is dependent on the season and placement location. Volunteers will be involved in clearing land for growing crops, fertilizing the land, developing land for cropping, planting crops, nurturing crops, teaching farming techniques to local staff, assisting with purchasing stock, caring for stock, and fencing and moving stock.While previous agricultural experience is not a prerequisite for this project, more experienced volunteers will be able to assist in developing the project and teaching techniques to the staff and older children, helping them to farm their crops and animals more effectively.

A volunteer in this project can assist in numerous ways depending on your interest including:Research into soil preparation and irrigation methods, Research trials involving various crops and growing methods, Helping schools in the area to develop a small school farm so that the schools can be more self-sufficient, Identify market structures and channels in the supply & distribution chain;
Teach basic business practices, example general business planning, Assist in organizing networks of local farmers.

Voluntourism and Sightseeing - Program

Participate in Voluntourism program to immerse yourself in Ghanaian Tourism while contributing to the livelihoods and education of children, healthcare, community development, women empowerment support, environmental conservation or the sustainable local farming methods in the communities. To embark on the meaningful journey of life time, this is an opportunity for you to connect with West African culture, while being a part of broader positive community change, supported by volunteers from around the world. As part of Voluntourism program, we invite you to join this volunteer-focused tour to Ghana and you will get the opportunity to explore this beautiful country while serving the communities and the vulnerable in program areas as: Volunteer in Teaching, Healthcare

Community Development,Women Empowerment Support,

Environmental conservation and Agriculture projects in the towns.

 

Site seeing:

The Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit some Tourist places of interest such as Lake Bosomtwi in Ashanti region, Elmina Castle in the Central region ,Accra Cultural Centre, Paga Crocodile Pond in the Upper East region, Kakum National Park Central region, Mole National Park in the Savannah region, Cape Coast Castle - Central region, Aburi Botanical Gardens - Eastern region, Lake Volta Volta region, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Accra among others.

 

Package Includes: Accommodation is homestay with host family, Excursions, food (breakfast & dinner daily), transportation and supervision for volunteers from the start to the end of program. Volunteers may stay with a host family and our host family cooks Ghanaian foods which include Fufu, Banku and Yam for you. As part of the program, volunteers will also learn how to cook Ghanaian food.

Program duration: 1 week to 4 weeks

Program itinerary: Volunteers work for meaningful
humanitarian projects and also have the opportunity to travel to tourist places of interest in Ghana and below is program itinerary:

Day 1 - Arrival and Welcome for the volunteers. Arrival will be at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana and would be met by Volunteer coordinator on arrival.

Day 2 - Transfer to Project Location - Volunteers will travel to the project city

Day 3  - Local city tour and orientation - Volunteers will be provided important information about the safety, culture and give a tour of project towns to the volunteers, informing them about the internet café, banks, restaurants, and markets.

Day 4 - Project Introduction – Volunteers will visit your project site, meet the local staff and begin the volunteer work. Volunteers will be given options to work in placement as Teaching, Healthcare, Community Development, Women Empowerment Support, Environmental Conservation and also Agriculture project.

Day 5 - Weekend Tours - Volunteers will have the opportunity to travel to some tourist places of interest around Ghana which includes Mole national park, Kintampo falls, Wli water falls, Tafie monkey sanctuary among others to further explore its diverse wildlife scenario.

Cultural Exchange - Program

Cultural Exchange program is for participants who wish to learn more about Ghana cultural, traditions,drumming,dancing and is aimed at helping volunteers adapt themselves with the unique Ghanaian culture,people and the environment. Most visitors love applying for this program due to it benefits and impact it has on them. This program is aimed at forming connections and sharing cultural experiences between volunteers and host families in Ghana. Our main objective is that our programs offer participants a genuine cultural experience during their stay; G.H.V.S does this by placing  in the care of local Ghanaian families.

We will introduce participants to life in Ghana, Africa. Visitors will have amazing opportunities to interact with local Ghanaian through a variety of activities such as drumming and dances as well as language exchange. Participants will be immersed in the local culture, drumming,dancing, tradition and learn history. Participants will learn some cultural drumming and dancing to immerse in Ghana tradition and way of life.

 

Purpose of the project:

This is an opportunity to take some break from your campus and come to Africa  and Volunteer will be to traveling to various part of the country, visiting different cities, a safari park and a monkey sanctuary. Listening to soothing music of the traditional bamboo flute, helped raise our spirits. As part of the activities organized during the cultural exchange is field visits, sampling the African great cuisine from Ghana, talent shows, music etc. The value of the cultural exchange is to create understanding of other cultures and embrace them for the unity of the global village and create linkages between the youth.

Some of the focus areas will be on cultural immersion, language study and community service. They will teach and perform; study Ghanaian languages; learn about traditional Ghanaian music, instruments, and dance; and be immersed in African culture.

Any support the group wants to provide a community is also welcome and will be so much appreciated by the community.

Day 1 - Arrival: on arrival at Kotoka International Airport in
Accra, Ghana, Volunteers will be met by local coordinator and transfer to host accommodation.

Day 2 - Accra City Tour: Volunteers will be guided for a city tour of Accra to visit places like Arts Centre, National Theater, Independence Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra, where you will have the opportunity to experience Ghana.

Day 3 - Kumasi City Tour: Volunteers will travel to Kumasi, Ashanti region to also explore the legends of the famous Ashanti people and will visit Manhyia Palace Museum, to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti Kingdom and besides tour through the National Cultural Center which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of the brass makers potters and batik makers.

Day 4 - Visit Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle and Kakum National Park : Volunteers will visit Cape Coast Castle built by the Swedes in 1653 and was later taken over by the British and this castle also houses the West African Historical Museum. The next visit is the Elmina Castle a World Heritage site that was built by the Portuguese in 1482, is also known as St. George’s Castle.  This castle was the first European structure built in Sub – Saharan Africa. Then travel to Kakum National Park, one of West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests. Kakum is the home to over 40 large mammals and 400 bird species as well as many species of butterflies, flora and fauna. The most popular attraction is the Canopy walkway which is made up of seven bridges extending 330m, hanging 100 feet above the forest floor. Choose between a 2 km nature walk through this forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they offer or take a walk on the canopy walkway.

Project Location: Gate of Hope Volunteer Service (G.H.V.S) projects are located at Teiman,Abokobi,Oyarifa communities, including "Spintex" area all in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Accra is the capital and largest city in Ghana, with a population of over two million. Accra stretches along the Ghanaian Atlantic coast and extends north. The nearest airport is Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra and distance from the Airport to the project site in Accra is approximately 25 kms. And besides we have additional Volunteer placements in the Volta Region, Ghana which is located in eastern Ghana, bordering Togo. In Volta Region, our Volunteer placements can be located in  Kpando, Anfoega, Hohoe, and Ho areas. The bus ride of 2-3 hours from Accra to the Volta Region but once you get there, you’ll be amazed at the Volta Region’s serene beauty, with its beautiful rivers, water falls, lagoons, and rolling hills. Most of our volunteer placements in the Volta Region are within walking distance from host family.

Accommodation - homestay: (Volunteers are accommodated with host family at a good and conducive secured living environment): The host family provides breakfast and dinner two (2) meals a day.The best known Ghanaian staple is fufu, which consists of a basic starchy ingredient such as cassava,yam, plantain or rice. You may also be served different types of stew,be it fish, chicken or vegetable. Fried plantain is another popular local dish.

Volunteer Orientation – detail orientation schedule: on arrival at the airport volunteers will be met by a local representative. From there volunteers will be taken to their accommodation and introduced to their host family. All newly arrived volunteers receive a full orientation to prepare them for their stay in Ghana, including an introduction at their project site and help with familiarization within the local community.
The local team are available to help volunteers withdraw money, buy phone or sim cards, get used to using public transport, and to arrange weekend activities
